It’s getting serious now! | Dutch App Industry – Brechtje de Leij

App Development in the Netherlands: Overview & Future opportunities
Mobile dominates! Mobile first, we do not want anything else. Our economy benefits – 24-hour ease of use from desk to bathroom, anywhere, anytime, by young and by old. After 10 years of Mobile development in the Netherlands, mobile technology is maturing. Original pioneers have now become decision makers and influencers. Apps are increasingly the center of growth hacking and digital transformation. However, we see plenty of opportunities to profit from ‘Netherlands app country’ . More devoted teams, a focus on users through service-design and smart revenue models to see the conversion and “engagement” grow. This is what the appril festival is about, the time for experimentation is over:”It’s getting serious now!”

Lead by Brechtje de Leij (digital strategist and mobile expert) we look at the current status of app building in the Netherlands. We do this in an interactive session with the audience in cooperation with Buzzmaster. During the panel discussion with captains of industry, we discuss the outcome of two studies that Ruigrok Netpanel carried out on behalf of the appril festival. One study highlights the status of the Netherlands as an app building country; where are our opportunities and what will be the next step. The second study was conducted among the Dutch population and provides insight into technology and the use of apps. We will conclude this part with two innovative Dutch showcases,.

Clash of Cultures | User Behaviour – Icemobile

User behaviour differences across continents
IceMobile’s Bright Stamps loyalty solution is used by multiple retailers worldwide. Although most of the app’s features are the same for each client implementation, the usage of each of these features can differ significantly per retailer. In this in-depth session, Jaap & Guido will dive deeper into the usage and impact of certain app features in Asian countries versus Western Europe & North America. Based on different cases, they will demonstrate some of the most striking differences for these two regions.

IceMobile was founded in 2002 with the vision that mobile would become the most important medium in people’s lives. Over the past 15 years we’ve created award-winning apps and mobile experiences for all kinds of industries, such as retail, banking, travel, fashion, insurance, music, and more.

The future is what excites us most. Digital disruption is about to hit retail. How will AI, automation, decentralized production and distribution impact people’s lives? These fascinating questions are the reason we’re in this business. We intend to drive the change.

Old wine, new bottle – Nomensa

Apps might feel like they go hand in hand with Lean UX, start-up culture and a fail fast mentality. While these things are all valid in certain circumstances UX has a broad and deep set of specialisms that a serious app developer can learn a lot from.

Hannah will take you through some traditional UX practices from analogue research projects and reimagine them in an app specific setting. Looking at disciplines in library science, biology and human factors we will unpick the universal truths of managing information and being creative with data that can be applied in the new digital economy. You will look at Content Strategy and how it helps in API first design. Also how Information Architecture can move you towards an A.I ready product. And finally, take a light hearted look at some universal truths of UX and how a Lean UX model might miss them in the App building process.

Nomensa is one of Europe’s largest strategic UX design agencies that combines expertise in psychology, user-centric design, accessibility and technology to create ground-breaking digital experiences.

How apps become popular – David van der Loo

Of course, an app is popular when it’s being used by many people. But why would these people use your app in the first place? Because it valuable to them! It is my mission to empower people to turn their ideas in to apps that improves other people’s lives. And it is in making apps that improve people’s lives that they become popular. How, you ask…? Well, that is what you will learn during this break-out session.

To learn how to do this, I started in 2011 to gather information on creating popular apps. I have interviewed dozens of app entrepreneurs with popular apps, done multiple scientific researches with Tilburg University and worked with hundreds of clients to turn their ideas into apps.

The most outstanding experience, knowledge and best practices gathered through the years I will share with you Appril Festival.

You will learn about the things that popular apps use in fields like:
+ Marketing of apps
+ App idea development
+ User retention
+ Download strategy
+ Business models for apps

You will find snippets of this knowledge right now on www.AppSpecialisten.nl (in Dutch). And will you join me for the culmination of this knowledge during the big reveal during the Appril event?

Hope to see you there,

-David van der Loo

Deep linking myths debunked – GetSocial

“Imagine a Web without URLs. That’s how mobile apps world looks like without deep links.” – VentureBeat.

According to AppSight data, only 41% of top Android apps have deep links implemented. Why? It’s is not obvious how you can leverage them, and implementation is not as transparent as documentation states.

In the first part of the talk, Vitaliy will show how you can use deep links to create an excellent onboarding experience, how to get more organic installs with app indexing and referral campaigns, how to authenticate users with no explicit authentication and more.

In the second part, we will talk about the inconsistency in the deep links implementation on Android and iOS, technical limitations of App Links, Universal Links, custom schemas and what are the missing parts of the deep linking ecosystem that you will have to build on your own. Do not expect step by step implementation guide, instead condensed learnings you can not find in the documentation from 4 years of experience in building deep linking infrastructure at GetSocial.

The talk will be interesting for Android and iOS developers who don’t want to spend days trying to figure out the best way to implement deep links and product managers who want to learn how deep links can help their apps grow organically and retain existing users.

Building AI into apps | Behind the Scenes – Tele2

Ground-breaking technological development: Tele2 App with Dutch speaking AI in Conversational User Interface
Tele2 is developing a new app to keep contact with its mobile customers. During the concept phase the deployment of CUI on the basis of AI emerged as the winner. Then the challenge was to bring this to reality within 5 months. You may have seen enough articles and blogs about AI by now. But do you already know cases with an AI Chat solution in Dutch? The latter proved quite difficult. In this session Tele2 shares what they had to deal with in practice.

The next big wave in AR | Mobile Technology – TWNKLS

Practical examples of AR, the next big wave in mobile technology
In his keynote Gerben will show multiple applications with AR that companies to day have in place that offer serious business value. AR applications make processes easier, shorten lead time, convince the end customer and are exceeding by far the status of “gimmick”. TWNKLS is the augmented reality computer vision powerhouse that focuses on creating, developing and implementing AR applications. As a pioneer, we have more than 8 years’ experience in developing AR for Industry, Commerce, Security and Health. Valuing Trust – Trustier

Trust is the glue that holds society together. It has shifted away from institutes to a new generation of end users, using mobile and peer-to-peer solutions. Trustier offers a platform for measuring trust(worthiness), by using Trustcoins as a universal currency of trust. Based on the amount of Trustcoins received and withdrawn, each individual and company will have a Trust Tier. Tiers serve as a level of trustworthiness and can be used in all online or offline exposure as a marketing and (personal) branding tool (for instance on a CV or as a reference) and will become auditable in a blockchain.

A tool to use whenever you are applying for a job, renting, hiring, buying, selling, donating, loving, trading and meeting.

Discover the new Rijks app | Showcase – Rijksmuseum

All about the new state-of-the-art Rijksmuseum app – launched January 2018.
5 years ago, the Rijksmuseum launched the successful website Rijksmuseum.nl and the digital concept Rijksstudio, which became the cultural digital heritage benchmark for connecting people and the collection. The Rijksmuseum wants to seize the opportunities mobile has to offer with a new state-of-the-art app (launch January 2018). It consists of three main sections:

1. Rijksstudio
2. Multimedia tours
3. E-tickets

With the new app, you can enjoy the Rijksmuseum collection wherever you are: in a train, at home on the couch, or in the museum taking a multimedia tour. The app offers one simple way of enjoying the collection for everyone, whenever, wherever. ‘Swiping’ through the collection and personal Rijksstudio collections, and browsing through the museum itself, is a similar experience since the museum’s multimedia tours are fully integrated in the app. It is all one intuitive user art experience.

An important part of the new app is the innovative indoor automatic wayfinding that is fully integrated with our multimedia tours. This platform uses an interactive map and tailor-made automatic wayfinding directions for the museum site. The app will always know where you are by means of 300 iBeacons that have been placed invisibly in the museum. With this new infrastructure, the app can guide you to and from any location.

Workshop Minimum Viable Products – Woost

Address: Woost Technologies, Frans de Wollantstraat 82, 1018 SC, Amsterdam

A Minimum Viable Product contains just the right amount of functionality to validate your concept. In most cases, 80% of the value of a product can be achieved with 20% of the functionality. By focusing on that 20% first, you can validate your concept first, without burning your entire budget. With this first version, you can start collecting feedback and measuring usage. With this information, you can start the Build → Measure → Learn cycle and improve the product based on data, instead of on assumptions.

At Woost we build MVPs for brands like Heineken and VUmc, but also for startups like Scala and Boat020. During our in-house workshop at Appril, we will discuss which ideas are suitable for an MVP approach and how you decide what your MVP should contain. Do you have a great idea you want to launch? Do you need to convince your investor? Come to our Appril in-house breakfast session to discuss your idea with our developers and business
accelerators, and to get one-on-one advice about how to get started!Great toasties and nice orange juice are included.

Quality and speed of development is becoming ever more important in software development as the software we are building becomes more complex and the ability to adapt to new innovations is essential. We have a product that can be customised for many retailers with extra features for each retailer. CI/CD is our chosen method to deal with it and quality assurance is a big part of this process.

This is a case study on how we got to where we are today with all the failures and successes and how we finally ended up with test driven development on Android and iOS.

Culture eats strategy for breakfast! – IJsfontein

Come join our Breakfast session in which we talk about an app for cultural change within an organization. A delicious breakfast is included!

We live in a world that is changing at an ever-faster pace. Changing strategy is most likely the first step to take as an organization to survive the future. However, in order for a strategy to be successful, the associated cultural change must also be implemented.

Despite many initiatives it remains difficult to change culture (attitude & behavior) within organizations and it often goes wrong and takes a long time. One of the key elements for changing culture is to do it together and support it permanently during the implementation of a strategy.

At IJsfontein we have 20 years of experience in developing playful solutions that have a serious impact on changing culture and we know that learning objectives for cultural change can be reduced to 20 game formats. We developed an app to permanently support culture change in a social, faster, cheaper and simpler way by using these game formats.
