Checked against Apple's App Store Connect help and Google's Play Console help on 15 Oct 2026.

Explained by the editors, updated 14 Oct 2026

A wrong pixel size is a dull reason for a failed store upload, and an easy one to avoid. This page pairs the sizes both stores ask for with a checker that tells you whether they will take your file and, for an icon, how it looks inside the iOS and Android masks.

How to use the checker

  1. Pick App icon or Screenshot.
  2. Choose a PNG or JPEG. Your browser reads the file locally; nothing is uploaded.
  3. For an icon, the preview shows it in the iOS rounded square, an Android circle and an Android squircle. Leave the 66 dp safe zone ticked to see the circle your logo should stay inside.
  4. Read the checks under the preview.

The icon rules

Icon Size Notes
iOS app icon 1024 x 1024 px Square, unmasked artwork; the system rounds the corners
Google Play store icon 512 x 512 px 32-bit PNG with alpha, up to 1024 KB
Android adaptive icon layers 108 x 108 dp Separate foreground and background layers
Logo in the foreground layer 48 to 66 dp The outer 18 dp on each side is reserved for masks and motion effects
Google Play feature graphic 1024 x 500 px JPEG or 24-bit PNG, no alpha

Apple's Human Interface Guidelines give 1024 x 1024 px as the layout size for iOS icons and ask for square layers, because the system applies its own mask. App Store Connect help adds that the icon travels with your build, made in Icon Composer or an asset catalog in Xcode. The Android figures come from the Android developer documentation on adaptive icons and Google's Play Console help on preview assets.

The checker flags an icon that isn't square, one under 512 px (too small for both stores), one from 512 to 1023 px (enough for Google Play, too small for Apple) and any transparent pixels. Fill the background before you export for Apple; its guidelines ask for a full-bleed, opaque background layer.

The screenshot rules

Google Play accepts JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha, each side between 320 and 3,840 px, with the long side no more than twice the short side. You need at least two screenshots across device types to publish. To be eligible for promotion in Play's recommendations, an app needs at least four screenshots of 1080 px or more, at 1080 x 1920 portrait or 1920 x 1080 landscape (three for games).

Apple accepts .jpeg, .jpg or .png files without transparency, up to 10 per device size, and wants exact sizes for each display class. These are the classes that matter most at the time of writing, from Apple's screenshot specifications in App Store Connect help:

Apple class Portrait sizes Required
iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display) 1179 x 2556 or 1206 x 2622 px Yes, for every iPhone app
iPad 13-inch display 2064 x 2752 or 2048 x 2732 px If the app runs on iPad
iPhone with Dynamic Island (large display) 1260 x 2736, 1290 x 2796 or 1320 x 2868 px No
iPhone with Face ID (large display) 1284 x 2778 or 1242 x 2688 px If the large Dynamic Island set is missing

Landscape sizes are the same numbers swapped. When your interface looks the same across devices, App Store Connect scales the highest required resolution down for the smaller classes, so one good set per required class is enough.

Worked example: the density table

With no file chosen, the tool shows the pixel sizes for an adaptive icon layer and a legacy launcher icon. Each is the dp value times the density's scale factor (1, 1.5, 2, 3 or 4), rounded to whole pixels:

Density Adaptive layer (108 dp) Legacy icon (48 dp)
mdpi 108 px 48 px
hdpi 162 px 72 px
xhdpi 216 px 96 px
xxhdpi 324 px 144 px
xxxhdpi 432 px 192 px

The same formula puts the 66 dp safe zone at 264 px across on an xxxhdpi layer, so a logo drawn on a 432 px canvas should fit inside a centered 264 px circle.

Now two files. A 1024 x 1024 PNG with transparent corners passes the size check and gets a warning about its transparent pixels. A 1179 x 2556 iPhone screenshot is an accepted App Store size but fails Google Play's ratio rule, because 2556 is more than twice 1179.

What it doesn't check

The checker reads only pixel dimensions and transparency. It doesn't check file size, format, PNG bit depth or what the image shows, and it can't preview the dark, tinted and clear appearances an iOS icon can have in Icon Composer. Both stores refuse screenshots with alpha, so export them flattened. Apple's page also lists an iPhone Duo class, required from April 2027 for apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later, which the checker doesn't know yet.

For what goes on the screenshots once the sizes are right, read screenshots that explain the app in five seconds. The ASO character counter handles the text fields of the same listing.

Questions

What size should an iOS app icon be?

1024 x 1024 pixels, square, with no rounded corners of your own, since the system applies the mask. You add it in Xcode, through Icon Composer or an asset catalog, and it reaches App Store Connect with your build.

What size is the Google Play icon?

512 x 512 pixels, as a 32-bit PNG with alpha and no larger than 1024 KB. The launcher icon on the phone is a separate adaptive icon built from 108 dp layers.

Which iPhone screenshot size does Apple require?

At least one screenshot for iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display): 1179 x 2556 or 1206 x 2622 pixels in portrait, or the same numbers swapped for landscape. iPad apps also need the 13-inch class.

Can I use the same screenshots on the App Store and Google Play?

Usually not without changes. Current iPhone sizes are more than twice as tall as they are wide, which breaks Google Play's ratio rule, and Google Play sizes such as 1080 x 1920 aren't on Apple's list.

What is the 66 dp safe zone?

The center of a 108 dp adaptive icon layer, which no device mask clips. Keep the logo between 48 and 66 dp so it survives circles, squircles and rounded squares alike.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the file locally to measure it and draw the preview, and nothing leaves your device.
