Work out what you keep from an app sale, in-app purchase or subscription after VAT and the Apple or Google Play commission, per sale and per month.

Explained by the editors, updated 14 Oct 2026
The price on a store listing is not what reaches your bank account. The store first takes out the VAT or sales tax it collects for the tax office, then its commission, and only what remains becomes your proceeds. This calculator runs those steps for one price, then scales them to a month and a year, so a pricing decision shows up as money rather than percentages.
How to use it
- Enter the price the customer pays and pick a currency. The currency only changes the symbol; there is no exchange rate in the tool.
- Say whether tax is inside that price. Store prices in the EU, the UK and most other countries include VAT. US prices are shown without sales tax.
- If tax is included, enter the VAT rate of the buyer's country: 21 for the Netherlands, 19 for Germany, 20 for France and the UK.
- Choose the store commission from the list, or pick Other rate and type any percentage.
- Enter how many sales or subscription renewals you expect in a month, and the monthly income you want to reach.
Results update as you type, and nothing you enter leaves the page.
How the math works
The commission is calculated on the price without tax, so the order of the steps matters:
price before tax = price / (1 + VAT rate / 100)
VAT = price - price before tax
commission = price before tax × commission rate
you receive = price before tax - commission
With US pricing the first line is skipped and the commission comes straight off the price. Monthly figures are the per-sale amounts times your monthly number, and the twelve-month figure is monthly proceeds times twelve. The target line divides your monthly goal by what you receive per sale and rounds up to a whole sale.
Amounts stay unrounded until they are shown, so adding the rounded rows by hand can leave you a cent out.
Which commission to pick
| Preset | Rate | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Apple, standard commission outside the EU | 30% | Paid apps and In-App Purchase in most storefronts |
| Apple, EU storefronts with In-App Purchase | 26% | Standard sales in EU storefronts under Apple's terms from October 1, 2026 |
| Apple Small Business Program | 15% | Members with up to $1M in proceeds in the previous calendar year, in the EU too |
| Apple subscription after one year | 15% | Auto-renewable subscriptions once a subscriber has a year of paid service |
| Google Play, first $1M a year or subscriptions | 15% | The total, including the billing fee where Google charges one |
| Google Play, above $1M a year | 30% | Earnings beyond the first $1M; lower in some regions and cases |
Rates differ by storefront. Under Apple's unified terms for apps in the EU, in force since October 1, 2026, standard In-App Purchase sales in EU storefronts carry 26 percent, while Small Business Program members and subscriptions after their first year stay at 15 percent. In Japan, Apple charges a 21 percent commission plus a 5 percent payment processing fee on In-App Purchase sales, or 10 plus 5 for program members and subscriptions after their first year.
Google's Play Console help on service fees describes a split fee for the US, the EEA and the UK (since June 30, 2026) and for Australia and Japan (since September 30, 2026): a service fee plus a 5 percent billing fee. The first $1M and subscriptions still total 15 percent. Above $1M the total depends on the region and on whether a user installed the app before or after the change, so check Google's page for your case. When your rate isn't in the list, choose Other rate and enter the total, commission plus any billing or processing fee.
Worked example: €4.99 in the Netherlands
The calculator opens with a €4.99 price, VAT included at the Dutch rate of 21 percent, the Apple Small Business Program rate of 15 percent, 200 sales a month and a €1,000 monthly target.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Customer pays | €4.99 |
| VAT | €0.87 |
| Price before tax | €4.12 |
| Store commission (15%) | €0.62 |
| You receive | €3.51 |
You keep €3.51 per sale, 70.25 percent of what the customer pays. At 200 a month, customers pay €998.00, the store keeps €296.93 in VAT and commission, and your proceeds come to €701.07, or €8,412.89 over twelve months. The monthly figure is not 200 times €3.51 because it uses the unrounded €3.5054. To reach €1,000 a month the tool asks for about 286 sales or renewals.
Now change one input. A developer outside the Small Business Program selling in an EU storefront pays 26 percent: choose the EU storefront preset and the same sale leaves €3.05, or €610.35 a month. At the 30 percent standard rate it leaves €2.89. That gap of 46 cents on every sale is the case for joining the program before launch. Our comparison of app monetization models shows how the rates play out for subscriptions, one-time prices and ads.
What it leaves out
The calculator handles one price, one tax rate and one commission. It does not include:
- your own income or corporate tax on the proceeds;
- the yearly Apple Developer Program membership or Google Play's one-time registration fee, which you subtract from the twelve-month figure yourself;
- refunds, free trial periods and introductory offers;
- currency conversion and the price points each store generates for other countries;
- fees for alternative payment providers, external purchase links and web checkouts, which follow separate terms.
For the cost side of the sum, the app development cost calculator turns a feature list into an hours range.
Questions
Is the store commission calculated before or after VAT?
After. The store removes the VAT or sales tax it collects, then takes its commission from the price without tax. With 21 percent VAT, a €4.99 price leaves €4.12 before commission.
Which VAT rate should I enter?
The rate of the buyer's country, not yours. VAT on digital sales follows the customer, so the same price leaves different proceeds in Germany at 19 percent and the Netherlands at 21. For several markets, run the numbers once per country.
How do I calculate a US price?
Choose No under the tax question. US prices on both stores are shown without sales tax, so the commission comes straight off the price: $9.99 at 30 percent leaves $6.99, exactly 70 percent.
Do subscriptions pay less commission?
Usually. Apple charges 15 percent on auto-renewable subscriptions once a subscriber has a year of paid service, and Google Play charges 15 percent on auto-renewing subscriptions from the first payment. Pick the subscription preset and enter monthly renewals as your number of sales.
Why does my sales report show a different amount?
Store reports reflect refunds, exchange rates and the exact local price each storefront charged. The calculator works from one price and one tax rate, so treat its result as a planning figure.
